Ready Player One Review: 7 Ups And 3 Downs

3. A Visual Feast

Ready Player One
Warner Bros.

With an estimated budget of $175m, Ready Player One should look good, but that’s not always the case in blockbusters, as we’ve seen in countless bad CG worlds and characters over the years.

Ready Player One is heavily computerised, but the effects work is really well done, and Spielberg does a great job of bringing the OASIS to life and making it convincing, ensuring that it’s just realistic enough.

There are some massive set-pieces, like the early, thrilling car sequences, and lots of great smaller details that go into making the world feel lived (or rather played) in. It’s a wonderful spectacle, and there’s a lot to take on a purely visual level, while some of the production design, even back in the real world, is extremely impressive.
