4. Alpha
Alpha is one of the most polarising horror films of the last year - a very different swing from Raw and Titane director Julia Ducournau, which is less a gonzo body horror film in the vein of her prior works and more a slow, devastatingly sad allegory for the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Alpha is set in a world where a new bloodborne disease slowly and painfully turns the infected into marble, and as tantalising as this might sound, Ducournau's film is ultimately far more of a drama with body horror fringings than the grisly, deep dish thriller you might expect.
Tahar Rahim's excellent performance as a man succumbing to his illness is spectacular, no question, yet the film is so relentlessly bleak, and doles out its upsetting story at such an unfussed pace, that a second viewing honestly sounds absolutely gruelling.
While the filmmaker's two previous films are innately rewatchable, Alpha is such an interminable downer that you'll probably consider once enough.
