15. The Long Walk
Stephen King's dystopian horror novel The Long Walk was long deemed unadaptable to its "uncinematic" nature, but director Francis Lawrence sure proved the doubters wrong with last year's brilliantly taut, deeply disturbing big-screen take.
If a Battle Royale-esque walking contest to the death might sound like a neat premise for a movie, Lawrence swiftly dispenses with any notion that The Long Walk might be a purely entertaining thrill-ride.
Right from its brutal opening death scene, this is an uncompromisingly violent and nasty film that's really the furthest thing imaginable from escapist fun.
And so as terrifically acted as it is by its ensemble, the film's gruellingly unflinching approach makes it tough to stomach more than once - even with the film touting a more crowd-pleasing ending compared to King's source material.
Again, it's an excellent film, albeit one that says everything it needs to say to the audience on a single sit.
