14. Her Private Hell
Perhaps no horror film this year has proven more aggressively, even willfully divisive than Nicolas Winding Refn's new movie Her Private Hell.
Like most of Refn's films, this gonzo sci-fi horror-thriller is high on lavish, hypnotic visuals and low on what might be classically deemed substance, what with its thin plot and puddle-deep characterisation.
Furthermore, Refn clearly has no desire to deliver an easily digestible narrative, ensuring that for many Her Private Hell was simply a maddening, sub-David Lynch experience.
And even for those who dug it, how often will they want to revisit a very good-looking but ultimately quite hollow work that doesn't seem like it'll offer much new on repeat viewings?
It is at least a miracle that something this averse to cinematic conventions can actually get made, especially at this level of production quality, considering how outrageously risk-averse modern Hollywood is.
But with Refn's filmmaking track record, we should've all known what we were getting into with this one.
