Reign Of The Supermen Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Embarrassingly Cheap Animation

Reign of the Supermen is certainly a better looking film than its predecessor, with director Sam Liu taking advantage of the various Supermen match-ups to entertaining ends.

However, Warner Bros. has proven themselves notoriously stingy in recent years with their animated offerings, keeping the budgets as low as possible to maximise profits at the expense of visuals that actually do the source material full justice.

As with The Death of Superman, the combination of 2D animation and CGI elements is garish and ugly, especially in the case of some dimensional portals introduced with the arrival of Darkseid.

Smoke clouds and explosions also distractingly fade out quickly rather than disappear naturally, and during the third act the budget constraints are especially apparent.
