Ridley Scott: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best
14. White Squall
Though rarely discussed when Scott's filmography is mentioned, White Squall is a bracingly effective survival film that teases rock-solid performances out of Jeff Bridges and his young co-stars, many of whom you'll recognise: Ryan Phillippe, Scott Wolf and Jeremy Sisto, for instance. It has its corny moments about the bond between young and old, but at its heart there's a tragic story here and one that Scott captures with plenty of visual flair, making the catastrophe thrilling and exciting to watch. Sure, the young characters can be irritating from time to time (they're preppy white kids, how else are they gonna act?) and its meditation on masculinity is pretty much surface-deep, but as a visceral and surprisingly affecting experience, it works much more often than not.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
