Ridley Scott: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best
12. Someone To Watch Over Me
Even Scott die-hards forget this one exists, but Someone to Watch Over Me is an enjoyable little gem of a film. It's a peculiar mix of crime thriller and romantic drama which works largely because of the three central performances, with Lorraine Bracco being the easy stand-out. Certainly an odd undertaking for Scott, the film works because it crackles visually and takes an unconventional approach to seemingly conventional material, sealed by the film's unexpectedly perceptive ending, which veers away from feel-good Hollywood formula and settles on something more sour and grown-up. There are also some interesting remarks on class, and though not Scott's deepest, best-acted or most stylistically impressive film, is, much like Black Rain, an elevated take on potentially generic material. Unsurprisingly, in trying to appeal to so many different types of audiences, however, the film bombed at the box office.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
