Ridley Scott: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best

16. Hannibal

While undeniably a disappointment given that, well, it was a Silence of the Lambs sequel directed by Ridley freaking Scott, on its own terms Hannibal is nevertheless an entertaining follow-up which sees Anthony Hopkins returning to his most iconic role with grand, sadistic relish. Yes, it's inferior to the original in practically every way, but it continues Lecter's story in an intriguing way by closing in on his relationship with Clarice, who is of course recast here with the ultra-talented Julianne Moore, even if it's hard to get over the fact that Jodie Foster opted not to reprise her role. What really makes the film work is its overall ickiness: after watching a man have his face carved off and fed to dogs, and another man eat part of his own brain, you'll definitely want to shower. Also, the film removes some of the more ridiculous elements from the end of the novel, so in a sense it improves upon the source material at least in part. Nobody needed the movie, but it was a mild success nonetheless.
