Roland Emmerich Offered Film Version of ASTEROIDS

Having already covered a global alien invasion (Independence Day), a giant creature destroying America (Godzilla), an apocalyptic world freeze (The Day After Tomorrow) and most recently the destruction of the planet (2012) - there was only ever really one man who Universal could come to first with their latest doomsday scenario picture, Roland Emmerich. Vulture reports that the German born filmmaker who has a penchant for visual orgy explosions has been offered the chance to make Asteriods at the studio, a post-apoclayptic movie where the Earth is already destroyed, which seems fitting because Emmerich has destroyed it enough times and where else could he really go? The movie finds humans living besides aliens in colonies from other galaxies who saved a bunch of us from Earth's destruction. However it's later revealed said aliens were the ones who blew up Earth and they now wish to wipe out the rest of humanity. Hardly's a Planet of the Apes twist reveal, eh? The movie is based around two brothers who €œgo through a seminal experience to figure out their relationship, against this huge backdrop.€ Asteroids comes from Matt Lopez, the screenwriter behind Race to Witch Mountain and The Sorcerer's Apprentice - so that might explain why the project sounds particularly dumb. Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is spearheading. Two years ago, Universal won the rights to turn the 1979 arcade game Asteroids (about a floating letter A shooting decimal points in space) into a feature film and this is what they came up with. I guess it could have been a lot worse. I'll be honest the premise sounds particularly daft on paper but then Emmerich has sometimes turned bonkers material into something entertaining. In fact his next movie Anonymous about the conspiracy of whether William Shakespeare actually wrote those famous plays, could be his daftest and most unbelievable film yet when it opens September 30th.
