10 Scariest Horror Movie Scenes Set In The Day

3. Peter's Possession - Hereditary

Though there is always a risk of a possession story becoming generic and rather tame in such a saturated market and sub-genre, Ari Aster's directing debut is anything but. 2018's Hereditary is a showcase of outstanding and bone-chilling tension and discomfort.

Unlike Aster's sophomore effort, Midsommar, which strikingly takes place largely throughout the sunshine in the beautiful Swedish meadows, Hereditary is more bathed in darkness as would typically befit such a horror movie.

This, however, does make one scene in particular stand out in such a way that it is hard to forget it. This came when Peter's (Alex Wolff) mind was taken over while in the middle of his class at school, and even in a film that has such a gruesome decapitation, it is one of the most disconcerting moments to watch.

Peter's hand shot into the air as his teacher and classmates realised something was wrong. His face contorted as he seemingly struggled to breathe, before shattering his nose on his desk and coming back to himself with a blood-curdling scream. For something to stick in the memory like this, in a film such as Hereditary, is a testament to the entire scene, from Wolff's acting, to the writing, and even the would-be innocent classroom surroundings.
