20 TERRIFYING Scenes In Non Horror Movies

2. Bilbo Baggins Jumpscare - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is many things, but a horror movie? Not at all, save for that brief jump scare that petrified generations of moviegoers all at once.

In Rivendell, Bilbo (Ian Holm) asks Frodo (Elijah Wood) to show him the One Ring one last time, at which point he violently lunges for it all while his face briefly distorts into a horrifically bug-eyed, Gollum-like contortion, before quickly reverting to normal.

It's not only a brilliantly effective and wholly unexpected jumpscare that hearkens back to director Peter Jackson's earlier forays into horror filmmaking, but is also extremely efficient in showing the audience just how dangerously corrupting the One Ring is and the massive mental toll it deals to anyone who carries it.

No matter how many times we've all seen Fellowship of the Ring, this jumpscare still manages to get us every single time.
