5. Simon Gaskell And Tracie Tremarco - Accused (2012)
Completely outside of what many thought he was capable of, Bean plays a cross-dressing English teacher who moonlights as transvestite Tracie come the evening. He strikes up a relationship with a man named Tony who murders his wife after she finds texts on his phone from Tracie. Tracie is unaware of the murder and travels to the Lake District with Tony, upon where he confesses to killing his wife. Tony takes mercy on Tracie and he goes down for the murder while Tracie is rightfully acquitted. Bean is masterful as both Simon and Tracie, getting the audience to care for both characters in vastly different ways. You sympathise with Simon as the everyman who hates their boring job while as Tracie you want her to cope with the abusive comments, which she aptly does with a razor sharp wit. Bean demonstrates he can be the funny man (or lady) when he needs to be, a stark change to his usual outing as the gruff bad guy. Such was his performance that Bean received two individual rewards for his dual identity portrayal, winning the Best Actor award from the Royal Television Society and the Emmys, a worthy recognition for a truly exceptional performance. He doesn't die either - double result.
