Sharknado 2: The Second One - 14 Awesomely Ridiculous Moments

8. Jumping The Shark (Literally)

"Jumping the shark" is a term most closely associated with when a popular TV show or franchise has begun its irreversible descent into lesser quality and waning popularity, coined following an infamous Happy Days episode in which the Fonz, you guessed it, jumps over a shark. When protagonist Fin and co. find themselves trapped in a cab in the flooded New York streets, they improvise a winch system to catapult themselves to safety. However, after Judd Hirsch's cabbie is eaten while leaping across, Fin has to resort to desperate measures to survive. That's right, he hops across the heads of several sharks like stepping stones, before Fin's brother-in-law asks him, "You know what you just did, don't you?". Fin replies, "Don't say it", and his brother-in-law does it anyway: "You jumped the shark." Its unexpected name-drop gives audiences arguably the biggest belly laugh in the entire movie: it's a perfectly-targeted line at the sort of crowd this movie is aimed at, and the delivery is brilliant.
