Shaun Of The Dead Vs Hot Fuzz - Which Is Better?

4. Heart

Shaun Of The Dead
Universal Pictures

Hot Fuzz does have plenty of heart to it, largely thanks to the developing bromance between Nicholas and Danny. There's a real sweetness to the way that they come to care for each other, like with the Japanese Peace Lily, but for the most part it's all in service of the comedy.

Shaun, on the other hand, has far more poignancy to it. Although again a lot is played for laughs, it does have emotional stakes as well, thanks to Shaun's relationships with Philip, his mum, and Ed. The way he has to see goodbye to all three are quietly upsetting, with Bill Nighy doing a wonderful job with his goodbye scene to Shaun. The ending, meanwhile, comes with a note of tragedy somehow balanced with joy and hopefulness.

Winner: Shaun Of The Dead
