20 INSANE Recent Horror Movie Scenes NOBODY Saw Coming
6. The Surreal Musical Montage - Sinners
Nobody could accuse Ryan Coogler of playing it safe with his most recent film Sinners, which in addition to being one of the most inventive and meticulously crafted horror films of recent years, earned itself a record-breaking 16 (!) Oscar nominations.
And Sinners' pièce de résistance is surely its mid-film musical montage set-piece, where Sammie (Miles Caton) begins playing a tune at Smoke and Stack's (Michael B. Jordan) juke joint, just as a narrator points out that precious few musicians are so talented that their performances can penetrate the veil between life and death, conjuring spirits from both past and present.
Just then, Sammie finds himself joined on stage by various musicians across styles and time periods - a DJ, an electric guitarist, an African drummer, and even a Kabuki-style dancer - for a mesmerising, brilliantly anachronistic performance punctuated by a vision of the juke joint burning down.
This is the precise point at which Sinners was elevated beyond greatness to all-timer status. And yet in hands lesser than Coogler's, such a sequence could've so easily fallen flat.
