5. Todd Dies (Not The Dog) - Good Boy
When the trailer for canine-centric horror film Good Boy went viral, all anyone could ask was, "Does the dog die?," with many expressing their desire to watch the film only if the gorgeous doggo, Indy, makes it to the end in one piece.
The irony is that folk were so anxious about this that they didn't even consider the prospect that it might be the human protagonist who ends up dying.
And that's precisely what happens.
Early on we learn that Indy's owner Todd (Shane Jensen) is suffering from a brutally debilitating lung disease, all while apparently supernatural and definitely metaphorical forces encroach upon him - forces which only Indy can see.
While one might expect Indy to save his owner by film's end, ultimately there's nothing to be done.
Todd bids a tender farewell to his loyal pet before succumbing to the strange entities in the basement, as we catch a glimpse of Todd's corpse in his house.
Ultimately Good Boy was less about a lovely dog being put in peril than it was said dog coming to terms with the mortality of its owner - an interesting and genuinely surprising subversion of what just about everyone expected when the film was announced.
