Sigourney Weaver: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
5 Awesome Performances...
5. Dr. Grace Augustine - Avatar (2009)
The highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar follows a human corporation's attempts to rob a distant planet of its natural - and very valuable - resources. However, the world in question is home to an indigenous and sentient species called the Na'vi who have made their home on top of the resource that the humans are trying to gather. Queue a narrative about foreign invasion that many have compared with Disney's Pocahontas. Cameron's film may not have the most original story to have ever graced a cinema screen, but there's no denying that the acting talent involved with the film is of a very high degree. It's obvious from the very first introduction of Weaver's character that she relished the opportunity to play Augustine - a woman who's outward toughness is matched only by her inner compassion for her colleagues and the preservation of nature. Weaver brings many of the personality traits that made Ripley so interesting to Avatar, including the hard-faced persona, and her performance in Avatar is certainly one of the best the film has to offer. Under-appreciated and overlooked given the other giant successes of Avatar, Weaver's performance here stands tall among the others on this list.
