The best sequence in the first movie was clearly the chase sequence between Sonic and Dr Robotnik, dashing all over the world thanks to the magic rings, including the pyramids and the Great Wall of China. The scene didn't last all that long, most likely due to budgetary constraints, but its brilliant execution makes it a plot device that can be used more often in the sequels.

With Hollywood producers trying to explore a wider range of markets around the world, the possibility of Sonic visiting a greater variety of non-US locations seems an obvious path to take. With the Great Wall of China and the pyramids ticked off, Sonic could visit locations like the Cocoon Tower in Tokyo, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge in Sydney, and, of course, the Thames and Big Ben (amongst others) in London.

While it may seem a little repetitive and derivative, it is hard to see the scriptwriters not going down this path, especially as it makes promoting the film so much easier.
