While the majority of the human characters in the this first film were a bit lame, the central couple of Tom and Maddie Wachowski actually held up quite well. The scenes with Maddie's niece JoJo and the establishment of the couple acting as de facto parents for Sonic, worked to explore the speedster's own identity and place in this world.

With the new family dynamic firmly entrenched in the fabric of the first film, the introduction of a new baby Wachowski would make things very interesting. The degree of jealousy that Sonic has already displayed towards Tom's 'best friend' ( his pet dog) could be amplified past just a joke in the sequel.

The family themes could also be amplified with Sonic needing to make a decision to either stick with the Wachowskis in the quiet existence of Green Hills, or leave with old friend Tails. The possibilities are endless now that the initial groundwork is set.
