Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Review - 9 Ups & 1 Down
6. It's Surprisingly Poignant
This movie could easily just have been a slight, breezy, fun time at the movies and it probably still would've scored strong reviews, but what really takes it to another level is the surprising dramatic heft Miles' origin story has.
This is especially true when it comes to both the instigating event which prompts Miles to take up the Spider-Man mantle and also a family subplot which causes him added emotional turmoil.
That's a vague sentence for a reason, and there are other moments best left unspoiled which will surely leave a surprising lump in the throat, even outside of the tragedies, there's a fist-pumping elan to the movie which recalls the peppy optimism of Richard Donner's original Superman movie.
Rather than just gloss over all the humanity and deliver a streamlined avalanche of self-aware mayhem, Into the Spider-Verse stops occasionally to luxuriate on these more relatable moments. And that's a damn good thing.
