5. Liev Schreiber - Kingpin

Want to know how great and transformative Liev Schreiber's performance as Kingpin in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is? There's a huge proportion of people who had no idea it was even him behind the character.

Schreiber's brilliance as the hulking villain ignores the usual tropes of a big star name in a role like that, because you'd typically expect them to be recognisable. Why else would you cast them, after all? Instead, Schreiber goes for the Mark Hamill approach, disguising his voice in a thick New York accent that rumbles like a subway train and breaks with vulnerability when we see him haunted by the ghosts of his own past.

The wonderful character design helps a lot, but Schreiber is the crowning glory on an absolutely intoxicating movie full of things to really want to write home about.
