Spider-Man Movies: 7 Perfect Performances & 7 That Sucked
4. Tom Holland - Peter Parker/Spider-Man
After Tobey Maguire was so good as Peter Parker in Sam Raimi's movies and Andrew Garfield even managed to transcend the mediocrity of his Spidey movies thanks to a not-half-bad performance, Tom Holland had a lot of pressure on his shoulders.
He was largely an unknown at the time of his casting for the most part, is English and was charged with playing a lot younger than the other two. But from the minute he appeared in Civil War, Holland did something that neither of his predecessors had quite managed: he captured the perfect spirit for BOTH Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
Holland's Parker is a ball of suppressed energy, laced with anxiety and awkwardness - far more obviously wrestling with puberty as well as the allegorical puberty of his powers - and then as Spider-Man he somehow manages to grasp likeability just out of the jaws of obnoxiousness. There's art in that craft.
