5 Things We Need...

5. The Wider MCU Is Brought Into Play

One of the main reasons fans wanted Spider-Man back at Marvel was to see him interact with Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and the rest of the Avengers crew. After being dragged through the mud in the Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spidey deserves to be done right, biting off a piece of that Marvel success that Iron Man and Cap have been munching for years.

Other MCU standalone films - Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy - are embarrassingly light on connections to the wider Marvel universe. This seems to defeat the purpose of having an inter-connected world, and also means these movies suffer from €˜where are the Avengers€™ syndrome. With Spider-Man now entering the fray, this lack of world-building should not find its way into his own movie. If Marvel won€™t let him play in the Avengers ballpark, Spider-Man may as well have stayed at Sony.

Sure, we€™re getting a huge crossover character-fest with Captain America: Civil War this year, but based on early reviews, we know Spidey's role is minimal. Let€™s save the good stuff for his solo adventure - how about Peter Parker and Tony Stark designing suits and gadgets together at Stark Tower, joking and cracking banter along the way? What about Black Widow and Spidey teaming up for a street-level crime thriller, sabotaging an evil plot without all the big-scale destruction and melodrama that plagues so many big-budget third acts?

In short, Spider-Man€™s ability to stay relatively low-key affords the writers of the film many interesting opportunities to connect it to the wider Marvel universe, and it would be a shame to see them go amiss.
