Star Trek: 10 Exact Moments We Knew These Characters Were Doomed

3. Lt. Carey - Friendship One

This one was just mean. Lt. Joseph Carey was originally in the running for Chief Engineer aboard the USS Voyager after it was stranded in the Delta Quadrant. In fact, he suffered a broken nose for his troubles, clashing early with B'Elanna. Things quickly settled though and he became a part of the team. In fact, he became such a valued member, that it would take nearly six years to see him again.

There's always a sinking feeling when a character, long since faded into the background, returns in what was confirmed as the final season. By Friendship One, many loose plots were being resolved, with Kes's story having been finished in the previous season. However, this episode takes it a little farther.

They even discuss the fact that he has a little daughter back in the Alpha Quadrant. They might as well have said that he and his wife had just bought a boat named 'Live4Eva'. He arrives again to fill the coveted red-shirt position on the mission. In a senseless act, he is shot by one of the locals before his body is beamed back up to Voyager.

And he had just ONE DAY left until retirement.
