Four ten-minute 'Short Treks' were released online after the first season of Star Trek Discovery, and there are plans for further installments. The first batch of episodes was well-received. They showcased bite-size side adventures for fan-favourite Discovery characters like Cadet Tilly, Original Series returnee Harry Mudd and Commander Saru, as well as a story set in the far future where the Discovery's computer has become sentient.

So far there have been two further Short Treks announced, both of which will be animated. These will air in the summer after the completion of Discovery season two. They likely won't be the last, however, with tentative plans already made to continue the series further.

Alex Kurtzman previously elaborated on how these tales fit into the expanded Trek universe, 'You get to tell these very intimate, emotional stories that are side stories to characters. So you get the benefit of the experience in and of itself but then when you watch Discovery you’ll see that these were all setting up things in the world of season two.”
