Star Trek: Every Starfleet Starship Class Ranked Worst To Best

The Akira class was first introduced in Star Trek: First Contact and quickly became a fan favourite design. The catamaran shape was distinctive and it looked like a vessel bred entirely for war.

This was partly true. It was one of the several new classes of ship that were designed for the battle of sector 001, a days long conflict between the Federation and the Borg. Though in the film, the battle lasts mere moments, there was in fact quite a long time that these vessels had to go up against the Cube.

The ship was build around a slightly circular saucer section with a low-slung set of nacelles, making it more difficult to target. The shuttle bay was designed in a way that was similar to an aircraft carrier, allowing shuttles to leave at the front and return at the back.

It was so successful that it saw missions in the Dominion war and beyond, remaining in service for many years.
