Star Trek: Every Starfleet Starship Class Ranked Worst To Best

The Galaxy class starships were introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation as a new breed of vessel. They were designed, like the older ships in the fleet, to seek out new life and civilizations, yet they were also equipped to handle far more responsibilities than the older ships in the fleet. Galaxy class vessels could serve as floating towns in space, with all of the amenities required to host dignitaries, conferences and even war-games.

The Enterprise-D would quickly become the most famous vessel of this class of ship. Its adventures would see Captain Jean-Luc Picard arguably through the most famous years of his career, while also becoming involved in several very famous fights. Wolf 359 would end up being a battle it missed (thankfully) but it took part in the armada that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border.

The vessel easily overpowered many of its foes, yet it was still designed for comfort and exploration. Its saucer section could detach from the star drive and get the crew to safety if needed - which the Enterprise required on its very first mission.

While the strongest vessel in the fleet for many years, it was not without weaknesses and many were lost to the Dominion. However, the imposing image of a Galaxy class vessel charging into a fight would usually encourage most enemies to turn tail and run.
