Star Wars: 10 Best Pieces Of The Expanded Universe
10. All The Back Stories
Raise your hand if you can name the officer on the Hoth Rebel base, who uttered the line stand by Ion control... fire. She was the only other female character aside from Princess Leia to have a speaking role in The Empire Strikes Back. And yet when the credits rolled, she was simply billed as Rebel Officer. A mere footnote in the annals of Star Wars history, never to be heard from again. Then, in 1996, thanks to an appearance in the Tales Of The Bounty Hunters anthology, it was learned that her name was Toryn Farr and she was actually more than a nameless member of the Rebellion. This is what the EU provided Star Wars fans. Glimpses of the people and creatures you really never got to know. Fans can vividly recall seeing and hearing that awesome band for the first time in Mos Eisley. Yeah, pretty cool looking guys, but, that was all. In the EU they were identified as Fignin D'an and the Modal Nodes. The band was made up of seven members, all Bith from the planet Clak'dor VII and featured prominently in the short story We Don't Do Weddings from the Tales Of The Mos Eisley Cantina anthology. According to the story, they were extremely popular during The Clone Wars but by the events of A New Hope they had been reduced to playing seedy bars like the cantina in Mos Eisley. Who knew? Well, Star Wars fans did. Or at least they thought they did. That is until Disney decided that none of the entries prior to Episode 7 are canon. Fignin D'an and The Modal Nodes are just a band now and Toryn Farr is simply a Rebel officer. It was fun while it lasted though.
A self professed Stephen King/Star Wars geek and pop culture neophyte, Scott tends to spend much of his time alone pondering life's greatest mysteries.....he also depends heavily on his son Liam, a great sounding board, to set him straight on Star Wars issues and gives him advice on what EXACTLY he's doing wrong.
