Star Wars: 10 Starfighters We Never Got To See

6. Y-TIE

Y TIE Star Wars

This ship, another of the Uglies, was more or less the direct opposite of the TYE-Wing fighter. Where the TYE-Wing had next to no valuable attributes at all, the Y-TIE could be said to have taken the best of both original ships and made it work for a new design. This ship originally appeared, not in the films, series or comics, but in the four-part roleplaying game The Treasure of Cellis Mott, in 1996.

The Y-Wing Starfighter and the TIE-Fighter were two of the most common designs of ships in the Imperial and Alliance fleets, which meant that the Y-TIE would end up being one of the most common Ugly design.

It was well armed, which made up for the lack of maneuverability. The gun turrets of the Y-Wing were replaced with the more powerful twin ion cannons of the TIE-fighter. This vessel required a gunner, separate from the pilot. An Astromech Droid was also usually present in the ship.

It was not equipped with a hyperdrive, but it could be given an upgrade to its shielding. This allowed it to engage in duties as an escort vessel for pirate convoys, as it was able to actually take a punch!
