After being turned into a remorseless killing machine, Grievous was named Supreme Commander of the Separatist Droid Army, and had his cybernetic enhancements - including his mask and cloak - modelled after his Kaleesh armour.

In order to be at peak strength, he was trained in the ways of lightsaber combat by Count Dooku, despite not being Force-sensitive. His upgrades made up for what he lacked in the Force, and he quickly became a proficient duellist able to wield up to four lightsabers at a time.

It was during this latest development that Dooku commissioned the creation of the MagnaGuards, who Grievous ended up training in the hopes of making them formidable opponents for the Jedi.

He grew to appreciate and respect the droids so much that he had their head pieces and cloaks designed to resemble his former bodyguards on Kalee, who had all been killed when Dooku blew up Grievous' ship.
