Star Wars: 4 Reasons Why Rumoured Boba Fett Retcon Is A Bad Idea
2. It Diminishes Boba Fett As A Character
There were a lot of Boba Fett stories produced in the 80s and 90s like Twin Engines Of Destruction and the excellent comic book arc Enemy Of The Empire that saw him battle and almost defeat Darth Vader. But as good as these stories were, they didn't do much for his character beyond justifying how much of a threat he was to his targets. Once the Prequels came along though, things changed and Boba Fett got a lot of character development. We've seen him cope with losing his father at the age of ten, try to avenge his father, go to prison before he's a teenager, and become a father. He even ends up briefly fighting alongside the Jedi during the Yuuzhan Vong War. A lot of Original Trilogy fans voice the opinion that he's a stronger character as a man with no past whose true face is his mask but that doesn't really lend itself to strong characterisation. The Boba Fett that Attack Of The Clones has given rise to may not be a man of mystery but he's a man of substance who we can empathise with at times and appreciate more. That's much better than him just being someone with a mask and jetpack who rarely speaks. And it's why killing off the pre-Original Trilogy Boba Fett would be such a terrible idea. If this retcon happens, Fett will be going from a Mandalorian who's been a ruthless bounty hunter since he was a child to some random bloke who committed identity fraud. That's a surefire way to ruin the character.
