2. There's A New Threat From The Beyond

Following on with the re-emergence of the Knights of Ren is the thing that might be driving them to come back into the film: it's not just that their master is now Supreme Leader, but because of what they found while exploring The Beyond.

Apparently, the Knights of Ren are going to return to inform Kylo of a much bigger threat that they encountered while on their travels, and one that poses a greater threat to the galaxy than even the First Order could manage. There was initial speculation that the new threat could even be the Knights of Ren themselves, turning against their master, but it does appear to be something else entirely.

Quite what that is remains to be seen though. The Yuuzhan Vong are one possibility, since they could be transferred from EU to new canon relatively easily, but that's just speculation and it might instead be something that's simply inspired by elements of them - like Kylo Ren taking parts of Jacen Solo's character - and mixed with something new, or it could be totally different.
