Coming after the official casting announcement last year was news that Matt Smith had joined the film in a key role that was very much being kept under wraps.

The led to a lot of speculation, with one of the most popular theories being that he was playing a young version of Palpatine. But what if he's not actually in the film at all?

When asked by LA Times about being in Episode IX, Smith said: "As far as I can tell, I'm definitely not." Lucasfilm never actually confirmed his casting, so does that mean it was nothing more than a rumour? Or, more likely, is this the former Doctor Who star going in on J.J. Abrams' particular brand of secrecy, pretending to not even in the film just like Benedict Cumberbatch wasn't playing Khan?
