Those who don't want the sequel trilogy to mirror the originals look away now, because at least on an ideological level Episode VIII will serve as a spiritual parallel to The Empire Strikes Back; the key pitch is going to be focusing more on the characters, challenging and pushing them in new directions.

Of course, this doesn't mean it'll be a direct retread (if anything the opposite), but it does suggest Episode VIII will be the darker middle entry that really delves into who these characters are. And who can argue with that? It again shows how this is really using an affinity with The Force Awakens to build something more, and suggests an expansive movie.
