Star Wars: How Episode 9 Fixes The Last Jedi’s Biggest Mistakes

9. Erasing “Let The Past Die”

The Last Jedi's ultimate fate might just be that we weren't ready for it. My personal qualms are where it lies as the second part of a potential trilogy, but in making a post-modern comment about the need to discard an almost religious/dogmatic dedication to something like a few old sci-fi films, Rian Johnson did so in almost too brazen a way.

Kylo's message was supposed to echo the need to move forward with newer storylines, characters and themes, but when that came to represent just how much The Last Jedi didn't appear to care for plot setup and narrative throughlines, something had to give.

Now we have Luke Skywalker (major fan points immediately) narrating the trailer, ending on "We'll always be with you. No one's ever really gone". The second line is reused from Luke talking to Leia at the close of The Last Jedi, but here it's given a far clearer purpose in regards to the franchise.

From moment one, Rise of the Skywalker is saying that Star Wars' past is JUST as important as what happens in the present, and the future.
