Star Wars: How Episode 9 Fixes The Last Jedi’s Biggest Mistakes
8. Fixing Luke’s Lightsaber
You could write a whole separate piece on the trials and tribulations of Anakin/Luke's lightsaber, from triggering a Force vision on Takodana, to being flung over the latter's shoulder in The Last Jedi, to then being torn clean in half by Rey and Kylo in a clash of ideals.
Now, the opening shot of Episode IX's teaser sees Rey holding Luke's demolished lightsaber once again, having assumedly gathered up the pieces from Snoke's ship before gallivanting off to help the Resistance on Crait.
There is some talk that this lightsaber is one Rey forged herself (mimicking Luke arriving with his own blade at the start of Return of the Jedi), but visually it's a perfect match, with some fans pointing to minor rivulets of solder as indication of the repairs.
Daisy Ridley noted during the Star Wars Celebration panel that "Luke's lightsaber lives", but also dodged the question as to whether Rey had directly repaired it. Some have taken this to mean that Rey might finally get a "staff-saber" - a creation born from fan art, but a weapon that would suit her fighting style perfectly.
