Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker - Everything It Gets Wrong
11. Sacrificing Rose To The Altar Of Toxicity
What happened to Kelly Marie Tran was ugly, unnecessary, and a sad reflection on the current state of fandoms in the modern age.
Being hounded by those who hated her character's role in The Last Jedi, Marie Tran eventually left social media, rather than face a barrage of complaints and hate-filled messages all day, every day.
Going into Rise of Skywalker, it was immediately interesting to see what stance JJ Abrams and Disney would take.
Would they continue Rose's character as a fan of Finn who slowly gains agency as a hero herself, saving his life and even kissing him as the beginning of a potential relationship?
... HELL no.
Rose is practically written out the film entirely. As a response to being asked if she wants to go on the next big adventure, she literally points out that she has to stay at the new base to help out - an exchange that could not be more ham-fisted if it came from an abattoir line worker.
From here she's given a handful of additional lines, but nothing of consequence, ending the movie as a background character.
