Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Ultimate Fan Demands That Will Never Happen
5. A Totally Different Story
Star Wars is like poetry. No, I'm not referring to the wise-words of Master Yoda, or expecting Threepio to suddenly turn into the galaxy's William Wordsworth ("I wandered lonely as a Cloud City..."?), but of course am on about George Lucas' oft-mocked statement on The Phantom Menace, with the director saying the episodes "rhyme." In truth, you can see what he's on about, with the story of the apprentice and the master (who''ll inevitably die), and the mirroring of the Skywalkers becoming Jedi, as well as some similar visual imagery as well. Regardless of what you think about the quality of the prequels, there are thematic reflections throughout. With Star Wars now ten years on from the last of those, and George Lucas no longer involved, there's a feeling that The Force Awakens needs to offer up something wholly different in its story, with it explicitly focusing on the new leads. Only, based on what we've seen, that isn't exactly the case. Luke Skywalker is expected to now be the wise old Jedi Master, and even Han Solo seems to be stepping into the mentor role, while it's highly expected at least one new character will have Skywalker blood running through their veins, and be the new Jedi. Kylo Ren, the film's villain, is literally trying to mirror Darth Vader. We've seen visuals, such as the Jakku sunset, which very much invoke those seen in the previous films. It's like poetry, sort of.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
