Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 8 Things We've Learned Since Release

4. That Bread Effect? It Was Real!

This may seem like a very minor detail in the grand scheme of things, but it's also a testament to J.J. Abrams' commitment to go back to basics with the Star Wars franchise. The scene in which Rey prepares a meal for herself on Jakku offered some insight into the hard and lonely life she leads as a scavenger, but in a particularly cool little moment, the liquid she's mixing suddenly expands into what looks like a bread roll. That was a simple enough little CGI effect, right? After all, with the way special effects have advanced in recent years, a small moment like this in such a massive movie probably would have taken no time or effort at all. However, it turns out that it took special effects supervisor Chris Corbould and his team over THREE MONTHS to master that by using practical effects to turn that concoction into an edible and alien looking meal. Surprisingly, it was deciding what colour and consistency it should be which took the most time, but however you look at it, this is still a tremendous amount of work to put into a moment it's fair to say most moviegoers probably won't remember seeing as the movie is packed full of so many other huge scenes. Don't get any ideas about insta-bread becoming a thing though - Corbould made it clear that it's not edible!
