2. Rey Or Luke Joins The Dark Side

The Rumour: One of the most persistent rumours about the movie was that either Rey or Luke would join the Dark Side in a devastating third-act cliffhanger.

For Rey, the prime evidence was that recent trailers emphasised her uncertainty about her role in the galaxy, and seemed to hint at the possibility of her ultimately being manipulated to stand alongside Kylo Ren.

For Luke, it was the fact that he has flirted with darkness in the past, and having been in exile for so long would possibly make him more susceptible to being lured to the Dark Side after being called out into the open.

Whoever turned bad, it would've ended the movie on on hell of an agonising down-note, that's for sure.

The Truth: Though Rian Johnson playfully toyed with the idea of both characters being turned, ultimately they remained on the Light Side for the entirety of the movie. For all of the film's big surprises, Johnson didn't quite dare to go this far, which is understandable.
