Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Ways It Sets Up Episode IX

6. Finn And Rose's Romance

Though Finn and Rose's trip to Canto Bight was by no means The Last Jedi's high point, it was still watchable thanks to the interplay between Finn and Rose and the performances of actors John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran.

Their subplot brought them closer together and helped set up a moment later in the film, wherein Rose stops Finn sacrificing himself in an effort to take out the First Order's battering ram cannon.

After crashing her speeder into his, moments before he's about to die, the two crawl from the wreckage and share a quick kiss.

However, there's no time to linger since the First Order's walkers are rapidly approaching, so the movie doesn't spend too much time with them after this, instead leaving Episode IX to do the heavy lifting with their relationship.

And this relationship should prove quite complex. The two are in the middle of a war, so it will prove impossible to settle down and have a normal relationship, something they'll definitely have to discuss. And, with Finn seemingly having strong feelings for Rey in The Force Awakens, there's a possible love triangle here that's begging to be explored further.
