A number of new characters are introduced to the Star Wars universe in The Last Jedi, and for the most part they're pretty damn great.

The most interesting addition is Kelly Marie Tran's Rose, a Resistance maintenance worker who has a substantial role to the point that she almost feels like the fourth protagonist of the new trilogy. Tran brings a lot of humour and humanity to the part while not playing it too broad or goofy.

Then there's Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, delivering a typically ferocious performance and ensuring that Star Wars can count another strong female character among its ranks.

Finally, we have Benicio del Toro as criminal grifter DJ, who is by far the most lightweight and disposable of the three major new characters. Still, del Toro is a lot of fun to watch in the part, imbuing the character with some distinctive tics while enjoying plenty of neat back-and-forth with several key characters.
