Even in its final moments, The Last Jedi is still eager to break with series convention. Just when we think we're about to end on a familiar shot of our heroes disappearing into deep space, we suddenly cut back to the stables on Canto Bright, where the oppressed native children are sharing the story of the Resistance's battle with the First Order.

Then, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, an anonymous young stable boy casually uses the Force to pick up his broom, and goes about his duties, whilst gazing wistfully to the stars above.

It's an unusually sombre, slow, intimate conclusion for a Star Wars movie; and given the film's length, it may at first seem wilfully superfluous. However, it underlines that Luke Skywalker's final words - "I will not be the last Jedi" - are true. Much as Rey came from nowhere, other children who are strong with the Force will emerge, from any walk of life.

More significantly, it serves to really hit home The Last Jedi's key message: that the spark of hope is always there, however small it may seem; and that it must be held onto and nurtured, especially by the next generation, as they are the ones who will hopefully learn from the mistakes of generations past, and pave the way to a better future.

If that seems like a bit of a sappy, sentimental, touchy-feely message; well, sorry to break this to you, but that's what Star Wars has always been about.
