Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 7 Big Problems It's Created For Episode IX

2. The Trilogy's Biggest Mysteries No Longer Matter

The Last Jedi's take-home message is that we should let go of the past, and it hammered this home by rendering key character back stories inconsequential. Although it wrapped up Snoke's arc and put Rey and Kylo Ren on course for their endgames, there are threads it left dangling which may now go unaddressed..

Rey's parents are unimportant because anyone can be a hero and Snoke's shadowy origins play second fiddle to his role in the story. That's all fair enough, but these are still two of the biggest mysteries of the sequel trilogy, and they no longer matter.

Snoke's past, in particular, no doubt contains fascinating stories. Where was he during the events of the original and prequel trilogy, and what role did his experiences during that time play in his ascension to head of the First Order? These are valid questions, but it seems pointless having Episode IX address them after his death.

Similarly, how Maz Kanata obtained Luke's lightsaber doesn't seem relevant now it's been ripped in half, and who knows where the Knights of Ren were during Last Jedi and whether their identities actually matter? If Episode IX plans on using them, it will have to come up with a good explanation regarding their whereabouts..

It's Episode IX that will feel the fans' wrath if questions like these end up being dangling plot threads when the trilogy has wrapped up, but there's little sense in addressing them since The Last Jedi chose to ignore them.
