Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 8 Parents J.J. Most Likely Wanted For Rey

7. The Force

Luke Skywalker Rey
Lucasfilm

Revealing that Rey was conceived by the Force itself would not only have been an easy answer for why Rey is so quick at picking up on how to use it in the third act, it would have made her the exact kind of protagonist Abrams loves to write.

Whether it be Star Trek, Super 8, or even Mission: Impossible 3, Abrams loves his chosen ones. Kirk overcomes his flaws and fulfills his destiny by defeating the man who killed his father years prior. Joe Lamb is able to empathize with the monster because he has lost his mother. Ethan Hunt is... Ethan Hunt.

This trait comes from Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey, but Abrams had it programmed into him at a young age by, ironically enough, the first Star Wars.

So having Rey be conceived by the Force as a predestined chosen one, much like Anakin in the prequel trilogy, would have fit incredibly well with Abrams' usual M.O. She's the only one who can stop the First Order because the universe says so, and that's that.
