Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 9 Moments Everybody Misunderstands

4. Canto Bight

If there's one sequence in the film that's come in for heavy criticism, it's that on Canto Bight. This is the casino where the galaxy's 1% spend their time and money, and where Ross and Finn head to find the master codebreaker. It's been referred to as a pointless waste of time, like something out of the prequels, a scene that should've included Poe rather than Rose, and something that could be lifted out of the movie without any impact whatsoever on the story.

Rian Johnson himself has addressed why Poe didn't go, stating it would've ended up being quite boring, and that's easy to understand. There'd be no push-and-pull there, and nothing for either character to learn and grow from. And speaking of Poe, it directly ties into the previous point, because without Canto Bight we wouldn't have DJ eavesdropping and cutting a deal with the First Order, which further proves why Poe shouldn't have been let in on the plan by Holdo, nor raised his own mutiny and secret plan, and cements his own learning curve.

Canto Bight is where Finn finally finds something to fight for. He learns this from Rose, who shows him the dark underbelly of the casino world, and that pushes him to become the Resistance hero everyone thinks he is. But even more important is how they, and more so Rose, interact with the stable kids and free the Fathiers. These sequences speak to the very heart of Star Wars, even if the chase might not be to everyone's taste. It's here that hope is spread, by showing not just the Resistance ring, but proving that there are people out there still willing to stand up for the downtrodden, and that people can come from nothing and fight against evil, whether that's the First Order or the people who mistreat children and animals alike on Canto Bight.
