Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 9 Questions None Of The Trailers Have Answered
3. Will Luke And Leia Reunite On Screen?
Luke Skywalker was barely in The Force Awakens, spending the duration of the story in isolation, but given that he has a much larger role to play in Last Jedi, this raises the question of whether he's about to be reunited with his on-screen sister, Leia.
The two characters haven't shared the screen since Return of the Jedi (unless you count their birth in Revenge of the Sith), so failing to bring them back together would be a missed opportunity, though there's no evidence of it happening in the trailers.
Footage of Luke on board the Millennium Falcon seems to confirm that he will find his way off Ahch-To at some point, but with Leia in Kylo Ren's crosshairs, will she survive long enough for their paths to cross?
Star Wars has never really delved into the dynamics in their brother-sister relationship as their familial connection was only revealed late on in Return of the Jedi. The intricacies of how they interact as siblings are yet to be revealed, and the question of why Luke refused to return to Leia in her hour of need during The Force Awakens needs answering.
Luke will be a far cry from the confident, happy-go-lucky hero who was last given significant screen time in Episode VI. He's a man broken by his own perceived failings and driven into self-imposed isolation after losing his faith. Before he can save anyone else, he could very well need saving himself.
Who better to do that than his sister, Leia? It's already been confirmed that the princess-turned-general will relinquish command of the Resistance in Last Jedi. Perhaps this is a decision she made so she could fulfil a personal, family-centric goal.
A reunion between the siblings would certainly be emotional and potentially game-changing for the sequel trilogy, but it would be nothing short of harrowing if one of them expires before that can happen.
