10. Palpatine's Throne

One of the coolest design elements in this movie is Palpatine's ominous throne, and so it's little surprise that the throne is actually inspired by an original, unused design created by late concept artist Ralph McQuarrie for Return of the Jedi (below).

And when we say "inspired by," it was clearly the formal basis for the design in every sense of the word. And considering how fantastic McQuarrie's design was, can you blame Abrams for putting it to good use?

For all the justified flak the sequel trilogy gets for rehashing the past, this was a smart choice.
