Steven Spielberg: EVERY Movie Ranked Worst To Best

4. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Saving Private Ryan
Paramount Pictures

Saving Private Ryan has been so engrained in our memories as one of the quintessential war dramas in cinema, it can be hard to remember just how staggering an achievement it really is.

Right from the iconic and unrelenting D-Day Landing sequence to the soldiers' final stand in the last act, the film never lets up.

The scenery is mesmerising and bleak, the emotion raw and unfiltered, the action allowing Spielberg to create some of his greatest scenes. Even the scenes where the squad are just walking and talking are riddled with pathos and tension, and the images Spielberg conjures up about the horrors of war are close to unrivalled in the genre.

A passion project, Spielberg's love for the film and the craft shines with every shot, every line of dialogue, and every traumatising death. It's not his lightest film, but is easily one of his most amazing.
