Sundance 2020: 10 Films Everyone Is Buzzing About
1. Minari
Snagging two of the festival's biggest awards, Minari is the clear favourite of Sundance 2020, with its heartwarming take on the American Dream causing many attendees to tear up during its world premiere screening.
Drawing parallels from writer-director Lee Isaac Chung's own life, the movie revolves around a Korean-American family that moves to a remote Arkansas mobile home, with father and husband David dreaming of building out a farm on his small patch of land. However, such a major transition throws the stability of his family - including a wife, son, daughter and grandmother - out the window.
Because this is such a personal tale for Chung to tell, Minari reportedly feels like it's been crafted with all the love and care in the world, an engaging and moving story about a family trying to survive under not-so-ideal circumstances, including financial difficulties, a new home, and seven-year-old son Daniel's heart problems.
Plus, critics have pointed out that the film also contains plenty of bright spots, with the bond between misfit Daniel and his grandmother proving a standout plot point. By all accounts, it's a warm and hopeful tale that doesn't shy away from the dark times either, and should make for a moving family drama with a strong relatability factor that helps it resonate with mass audiences.
